Sustainable House Day 2015

What is Sustainable House Day, and when’s it on?

Sustainable House Day, on Sunday 13 September 2015, is an international event where people who own houses that are doing good things with materials, energy, water and food, are opened up for any interested visitor to have a good long look at – to poke around, ask questions, and see for themselves.

It started in Australia, and has been going for about ten years, and over that period, tens of thousands of people have been inspired to ‘go and do likewise’. This is probably the most powerful tool we know of for educating and motivating people who know they want to do something, but are not quite sure what. And it’s something we all do – we see what somebody else has done, and say to ourselves “Hey – I can do that!”

Envirotecture has several houses open each year, and this year we have four of our own, and are connected to several more through colleague design teams or by having consulted to the owners. Houses that have generated positive feedback for the last couple of years at North Narrabeen and Neutral Bay are open again, thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of their wonderful owners. Willoughby Council also have their Devonshire Street Sustainability Hub open, whose building renovation we designed, and which also has some great compact garden and food ideas growing. And we have a brand new house at Hazelbrook made from hempcrete – a material that is creating a justifiable stir due to its many fantastic characteristics for farmers, processors, and in the finished building.
