We have improved and updated the popular slab edge insulation detail we first introduced to the world 7 years ago. It is now simpler, faster than ever to install, with a lower installed cost, and has even more long lasting performance. The need to upgrade was also driven by the disappearance of one of the magnesium oxide sheet manufacturers, and lack of practical support from others.
ISEG.3 uses a near-continuous skin of 304 grade stainless steel with the Z-flashing at the top folded in to it in one piece. Maximum lengths of 8m will cover most walls in one piece, and joints in longer walls are almost imperceptible. The assembly sequence on site is exactly the same as ISEG.2: Install edge formwork, place metal skin against formwork, place insulation board against skin, install Homeguard integrated vapour and termite barrier on slab edge, pour concrete. When the edge formwork is stripped, the slab edge is complete, ready for wall construction and cladding to proceed above.
The use of stainless steel in the new system as the UV and impact protection external skin may seem counterintuitive at first, but it is 304 grade versus the much more expensive 316 grade, and has lower fancy metals content and lower carbon intensity. Its performance in all but immediate coastal sites is certain to last the 200 year structural lifespan of the building.
