At this year’s BDA National Design Awards, our Mudgee Hempcrete House won the prestigious Paul Dass Memorial Prize, took out the Residential Buildings 251-350m2 and over $2000/m2 Category and won a Commendation from Bluescope Steel for best use of their products.
Owners Chris and Kerrie are as thrilled to share in the win (because without great clients we cannot do great work!) as they are thrilled with the ‘lived outcome’ in the house itself. Of course having a great builder also helps, and AK Constructions did a wonderful job.
We also picked up a Commendation in the Residential Alterations and Additions $250,000 to $500,000 Category, for The Paling House in Ryde. This was an old NSW Housing Commission cottage which was stripped of all asbestos and cleaned up, re-clad in magnesium oxide sheeting that still celebrated its humble roots, and with a whole new totally passive solar living and kitchen area added, clad in a mix of rusty Cor-ten steel and old hardwood fence palings. The palings had their daggy ends cut off, and were expertly and precisely installed over a highly insulated cavity-rainskin system by our wonderful builder Peter Verduin.
All of us at Envirotecture want to thank all of our wonderful clients and great builders – design award winners or not – without whose cooperation we would struggle to do much good at all!
